Why Setting Your Own Standard is Important
In my second year of college, I have grown to learn to be more introspective than ever. Today I feel that I am reaching of becoming the best version of myself, a person who I am proud to be. Encountering most incredible people, exhilarating experiences, participating in leadership roles, working, studying and evolving myself taught me to reflect on myself and my actions as a responsibility. Briefly, I have been thinking about expectations for myself and how they can be applied towards morally navigating at life.
Virtues that I expect myself to follow:
1) Kindness. This word defines my essence most accurately as I truly believe in being kind. I have been told quite often that many people take a person's kindness for weakness and that I am being naive in my judgement, but I think that having a kind heart takes strength of a character. I need to be kind to myself and others, and it has to be done in balance. Being more open-minded, less judgemental and checking in with myself by reflections, journals, and gratitude. By taking a high road, we soon discover how rewarding the results are.
2) Honesty. I plan on using this quality to be myself, to be consistent and transparent with what I do and to be honest in my intentions and feelings. I know for myself that I want to bring value to the world and have a good impact on people, and therefore honesty is a skill that I have to capitalize on to be able to understand myself and others more.
3) Respect for myself and my decisions. Once you have cultivated respect for yourself, the entire world begins to make sense. Always give yourself the authority and trust to make the right decisions as YOU ARE capable of making them. You deserve to be treated with respect and worthiness.
Honestly, you can apply this method to any area of your life. Do you want a specific grade on the exam? While studying imagine yourself receiving the grades, studying in a way that they are already yours. A specific internship in a company? Reach out to it, convey your interest and truly believe that you deserve it. Do you want an amazing boyfriend/ girlfriend? Write down the qualities of that person and how he or she will that make your life better.
Always know your value and that you are worthy for any situation, any person, any job.
"Above all, don't ever forget your worth — as I've told you time and time again: you, my sweet friend, you are enough".
